Somali pirates are relocating new bases from the Gulf of Aden near the coast of Somalia closer to India, Indian Defense Minister Manohar Parrikar expressed.
While speaking at a seminar dedicated to security in the Indian Ocean, the minister stressed the new threats that Somali pirates move could create.
“Piracy is a big threat in this region. Navy of several states are engaging them. But off late Somali pirates are shifting their base towards India,” Parrikar said as quoted by the Hindustan Times.
The attacks carried by pirates has been reduced for the last two years but this shifting will incase their presence and attacks to hijack international ships for ransom.
The federal government is struggling to restore peace and law and order in a country that has plagued by civil war since the collapse of Somali’s central government.
Last january, the Somali pirates seized a merchant ship in the red sea and that was their first plunder since 2012.
