The African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) says it highly regrets the deaths of two Somali National Army soldiers and the critical injuries caused on a third soldier during a road accident by its convoy on Thursday prompting protest demonstration by local people on the same day.
In a statement, AMISOM says the incident was from a road accident which occurred Thursday at approximately 1300hrs, between Elasha Biyaha and Lafole area outside the capital, involving a motorcycle which the soldiers were driving and an AU armoured vehicle.
“AMISOM offers their heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and has instituted an immediate enquiry to establish the full facts of the incident.” the statement said “Appropriate legal action shall be taken against those involved, if the inquiry reveals elements of culpability in the form of negligence, carelessness, recklessness or other, on their part.”
Meanwhile Somali police officials managed to cease a huge demonstration led by locals who protested against the growing incidents by AMISOM against Somalis.
The demonstration started later on Thursday made parts of the capital standstill as police officials using loud speakers told the demonstrators to return to their homes as the case of the death of the two soldiers were out into probe.
